What dystopian hellhole is this? Welcome to the British office | Peter Fleming
Austerity and underinvestment have given us offices that are cold, ugly and miserable. It’s time for a change The most depressing office environment I have ever witnessed was in a large London bank. Having passed through so many levels of security that Fort Knox would have been envious, I finally reached the nerve centre of the organisation. Open plan. Rows upon rows of forlorn faces. A dull, putrid green decor that was, perhaps, briefly fashionable in 1986. But only briefly. It was rumoured that some staff facing each other had never exchanged words. Studying the suicide-grey works...more »
How can I regain my sexual desire for my husband?
After experiencing an intense sex life, when we experimented with toys and had sexy weekends away, the thrill has gone *After 28 years of marriage, my husband had an emotional but non-sexual affair. I was devastated but, after the discovery, we actually came together again in the most physical way. My desire and orgasms were thrilling, we experimented with toys and had sexy weekends away – it was awesome! I hoped that those sexual feelings would continue for ever but, alas, they haven’t.* Aside from natural biological urges, people become erotically charged for many different reaso... more »

Dog days are over: what’s behind the decline in pets?
Novelist Jilly Cooper calls it ‘heartbreaking’ – but the rise of Generation Rent and social media could be causing us to turn our backs on four-legged friends Are Bella, Tiddles and Ginger an endangered species? The companion animals of the once great pet-lovers of Britain appear to be falling out of favour. Pet food sales are in decline and the pet food market is stagnating, according to Mintel’s Lifestyle report on consumer trends. Mintel pinpoints demographic changes: an increase in older people less likely to own a pet and Generation Rent, for whom pet ownership may be prohibit... more »
Euro 2016: Republic of Ireland begin with crucial game against Sweden
Republic of Ireland have only qualified for two tournaments since 2002 – Euro 2012 and this one. They have one of Euro 2016’s oldest squads, but Sweden also have their fair share of veterans, led by 34-year-old star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic. With Belgium and Italy to come, this is a must-win match for both teams even at this early stage Continue reading... more »

Elements of Mateen’s reported pledge of allegiance to Islamic State suggest he was inspired by group and recently radicalised - Orlando shooting – live updates The emerging scenario, and it is currently just a scenario, is that Omar Mateen, who is suspected of killing more than 50 people at gay nightclub in Orlando, was inspired, but not directed, by Islamic State. This recalls the San Bernadino shooting in California late last year,... more »

Avoid stoner chat, Instagram and ELO: how to enjoy the festival season
Summer is not summer without a festival or two – but there are rules to maximise pleasure For me, two things mark the official opening of summer. The first is the annual arrival of the freelance yogi who offers £5 foot massages in my local park. He lies flat front on his stomach, takes the sweaty feet of strangers in his hands and rolls them across his face and forehead. That’s the massage. He’s there every year at the first sign of sun and hasn’t been arrested yet. The second, the nationwide starting pistol for summer, is possibly my favourite thing about the entire season: fest... more »

EU cash flows to Cornwall, but many want to leave
As seen in Falmouth, Euroscepticism runs deep despite region apparently benefitting from EU more than any other. Why? Patrick Selman, a Cornish sailmaker, set down his needle and thick thread, paused for breath, and launched into a diatribe against the EU. “Brussels has done nothing for the UK, nothing for Cornwall. I don’t want to be run by unelected zealots who know nothing about Cornwall, nothing about Britain.” Selman, who works from a loft close to the docks in Falmouth, does much of his trade with Europe and is no hater of the continent. He even has a Normandy flag draped f... more »
What has the EU ever done for my … education?
British universities benefit from the EU in the form of foreign students, research grants and access to capital finance Britain’s university sector is unusually united over opposing the country’s possible exit from the European Union, and for good reason: the EU is a reliable source of funding, in the form of students, research grants and capital finance. There has been sustained growth in students from EU countries attending British universities in recent years, at a time when domestic school-leavers have been in a demographic dip. They now make up about 5% of UK student numbers... more »
We’re just 10 days from making the most terrible mistake on Europe | Matthew d’Ancona
The leave campaign’s arguments on immigration may successfully exploit voters’ fears, but they are not only objectionable – they’re absurd With a bleak inevitability, I have reached the point in this referendum campaign where I see the vote and the argument over Brexit everywhere I look. Even at Glyndebourne’s sensational revival of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg I found myself struck by the topicality of the warning issued in the final scene by Hans Sachs, the civic hero and poet, concerning *falscher welscher Majestät* (“false foreign rule”) and the risk that *welschen Dunst mit... more »
Daily Mail overlooks Orlando massacre in favour of 'pearl earrings'
National newspaper fails to cover the murder of 50 people on its front page, preferring to lead with a routine anti-EU story and a readers’ offer How bizarre that the Daily Mail should think an iffy story, “Fury over plot to let 1.5m Turks into Britain”, was more important than what Mail Online called “the worst mass shooting in American history.” As news judgments go, the call by whoever was editing the Mail on Sunday evening must rank as one of the most eccentric in the paper’s history. The secret life of a call centre worker: a degree of compassion never hurts | Anonymous
Empathy and calmness are vital in a job that has more perks than you might imagine Call-centre workers have it tough. Like retail staff, we are frontline cannon fodder. We have the task of dealing with people who are in the majority of cases lovely and reasonable but also sometimes disgruntled and short of patience. If you work 40 hours a week, the last thing you want to do is spend 20 minutes on the phone to a stranger discussing why your bill has gone up 30%. Who can blame them? Most people reading this will have at some point experienced a lifeless adviser who drones through a s... more »
Parental ‘choice’ in education has created the worst of all worlds
Forcing schools into chains and obliging them to conform is ironing out diversity, while the hierarchy is steeper than ever Parental choice is in a fragile state. Almost 30 years on from the “great” Education Reform Act, which ushered in the idea that choice would raise standards and satisfy all, barely a day goes by without a reminder of what a flimsy notion this is. Most shocking was the story about the academy trust that decided to bus pupils with special needs or disabilities from the high-achieving school at which they had been given a place, to a less illustrious one in the sa... more »
Orlando shootings: Trump and Clinton refocus campaigns after massacre
Dan Roberts in Washington, Ben Jacobs in Manchester and Sabrina Siddiqui in Cleveland at The Guardian - 47 minutes ago
Donald Trump attacks ‘disgraceful’ president Obama and ‘political correctness’ while Clinton questions gun laws The deadliest mass shooting in US history threatens to overshadow the 2016 presidential race with both leading candidates preparing to remake scheduled speeches to focus on competing challenges to national security. After a day of starkly divergent political responses to the murder of at least 50 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are expected to wade further into the overlapping but highly-charged questions of terrorism, gun control, ... more »
